Syria were losing in Tehran deep into stoppage time on 5 September 2017 when Al Somah levelled it at 2-2 against Iran and sent his country into a World Cup play-off for the first time. He left Al-Ahli in 2022 as the Saudi Pro League's record scorer on 144 league goals, with the 2015-16 title, three consecutive Golden Boots, the King's Cup, and the 2014 AFC Cup and two Kuwaiti championships at Qadsia.
