Saudi Arabia came into the 2011 Asian Cup as three-time champions and lost their opening game 2-1 in Al Rayyan on 9 January, with both Syrian goals scored by Al-Hussain. He won the Syrian Premier League with Al-Jaish in 2009-10, reached the last sixteen of the 2005 Under-20 World Cup, took fourth place at the 2004 Asian Under-19 Championship, and finished runner-up at the 2009 Nehru Cup, all inside 56 caps and 12 goals.
