On Decision Day, 6 October 2019, he took a hat-trick off Colorado, the second an overhead volley, and closed the season on 34 goals, more than any player had scored in an MLS season. That year brought the MLS MVP award and the league's Golden Boot; he also owns the 2022 MLS Cup and two Supporters' Shields at LAFC, Gold Cups with Mexico in 2009 and 2015, and the top scorer prize from the 2005 Under-17 World Cup. Against South Korea at France 98 he clamped the ball between both feet and hopped clean through two defenders, and Mexicans have called that move the Cuauhtemiña ever since. He won the 1999 Confederations Cup and still shares that competition's all time scoring record with nine goals, took the Gold Cup in 1996 and 1998, scored at three World Cups as the first Mexican to do so, and finished with 38 goals in 120 caps.
