France Football's 1985 ballot gave him 113 points to Rabah Madjer's 45, and he is still the last African Footballer of the Year to have won it while playing his club football in Africa. That same year he lifted the African Cup of Champions Clubs with FAR Rabat and was voted its best player, then ran Morocco's midfield at the 1986 World Cup, where they became the first African side to reach the second round. Spain missed all three penalties in the Doha shootout on 6 December 2022, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets both denied by him, before Achraf Hakimi chipped in the winner. Four clean sheets in Qatar, more than any other goalkeeper, carried Morocco to the first World Cup semi-final by an African side; he won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the Golden Glove, two Europa Leagues at Sevilla, and the Zamora Trophy in 2022.
