Cairo knew him as Bibo, and in more than 450 matches for Al Ahly he collected a single booking, which brought him FIFA's Fair Play prize in 1987. African Footballer of the Year in 1983, he won the Cup of Nations on home soil in 1986, two African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1982 and 1987, three Cup Winners' Cups and ten Egyptian league titles, with 24 goals in 54 caps.
