Inter's doctors found the heart defect in 2003, and a year later he collapsed at the Reebok before a Carling Cup tie with Tottenham, took an implanted defibrillator and played again by 2005. Runner-up at the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and a World Cup quarter-finalist that summer, he won the Belgian double with Club Brugge in 1998, the 2003 Coupe de France with Auxerre, and a place in the 2000 AFCON Team of the Tournament. Three goals made him Senegal's top scorer at a World Cup that ended in the quarter-finals, and he was an Africa Cup of Nations runner-up months earlier; he later came off the bench in Portsmouth's 2008 FA Cup final win.
