It is his shoulder, alongside Geoff Hurst's, that holds Bobby Moore aloft in the photograph every England fan knows, taken minutes after the 4-2 win over West Germany at Wembley on 30 July 1966. He played all six matches of that World Cup as the oldest man in Alf Ramsey's side at 31, won the FA Cup with Everton a few weeks earlier, and collected 63 England caps after twelve years at Huddersfield.

The maverick marauding full-back, Breitner collected a World Cup and a European Championship with West Germany, enjoying trophy-laden spells at both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. Career record: 48 caps and 10 goals for Germany; club career at FC Bayern Munich, Real Madrid Club de Fútbol, Eintracht Braunschweig; honours include national Player of the Year 1981, Hall of Fame 2018.
