It is his shoulder, alongside Geoff Hurst's, that holds Bobby Moore aloft in the photograph every England fan knows, taken minutes after the 4-2 win over West Germany at Wembley on 30 July 1966. He played all six matches of that World Cup as the oldest man in Alf Ramsey's side at 31, won the FA Cup with Everton a few weeks earlier, and collected 63 England caps after twelve years at Huddersfield.

Bayern Munich's shootout against Valencia at the San Siro in May 2001 came down to nerve, and the small Basque left back buried his penalty on the way to the European Cup. He started the finals of both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, won two Confederations Cups with France, and collected six Bundesliga titles and five German cups at Bayern.
