Five minutes into the game against Mexico in Miyagi on 9 June 2002, El Tín scored the first World Cup goal in Ecuador's history. Thirty-one goals in 72 caps stood as Ecuador's record until Enner Valencia passed it, and he was in the LDU Quito squad that won the 2008 Copa Libertadores, with league titles at Barcelona SC in 1995 and 1997 and El Nacional in 1996.
