His low shot from the edge of the box went in off Bodo Illgner's left post in the 78th minute of the 1992 European Championship final, sealing 2-0 against Germany, and he had twice left his gravely ill daughter's bedside to play in Sweden. Denmark's title that June heads a haul of seven Danish championships with Brøndby, three cups, Danish Footballer of the Year in 1991 and the Superliga's player of the century award.

On 13 November 1985 he started a World Cup qualifier for Denmark in Dublin, came off at half-time, flew by private jet to Düsseldorf and finished the evening playing a cup tie for Bayern Munich in Bochum. The European Cup came in 1988 with PSV Eindhoven, and his left foot brought league titles in both the Netherlands and Germany plus top-scorer honours in the 1979-80 European Cup with ten goals for Ajax.
