Six matches at Mexico 1970, six matches with his name on the scoresheet, including Brazil's third goal in the 4-1 final against Italy on 21 June: no one has done that at a World Cup before or since. He left the tournament with seven goals and a winner's medal, took the 1976 Copa Libertadores with Cruzeiro, and won the 1968 Brazilian championship and four Rio state titles with Botafogo. Yugoslavia led inside four minutes of the 1930 semi-final, so he equalised and kept going, finishing with three goals in a 6-1 win on 27 July. Three days later he levelled the first World Cup final at 2-2 and Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2, a title he added to Olympic gold in 1924 and 1928 and two Copa América wins, having scored five times across that first tournament.
